dear mom

Thank you.
Thank you for walking the steps you’ve walked.
If you hadn’t walked them, I wouldn’t be able to walk the steps I’m walking today.
You carried the lineage of your mother and your mother’s mother, taking with you words of ancient stories and writing your own where you saw fit.

You held songs of their pain in your bones and you carried lines of their beauty on your skin.
And throughout your existence, you paved a path that you chose for you.
You remembered where you came from and you chose your chapter.
The path you chose may not have been the one they would have chosen for you.
But it was the path you saw most necessary for your evolution.
And because you chose the path you chose, I have gotten to choose mine.

The path I’ve chosen may not be the one you would have chosen for me.
But I am remembering where I came from and I am choosing my chapter.
And throughout my existence, I am paving a path that I choose for me.
I hold songs of your pain in my bones and I carry lines of your beauty on my skin.
I carry the lineage of you and your mother, taking with me words of ancient stories and writing my own where I see fit.
If I don’t walk these steps, my daughter won’t be able to walk the steps of her future.
Thank you for walking the steps you’ve walked.
Thank you.
