dead weight

there's dead weight in my suitcase
of things i’ve carried with me for months
things i haven’t touched
things i know ill never touch

as i wheel my suitcase through yet another place i cant properly pronounce
the sound of the wheels against the pavement echoes a reminder of the dead weight ive carried with me for years
dead weight that was comforting
dead weight that felt safe
dead weight that was so sweetly familiar
but it became too heavy
it took up too much space
and i couldn’t lug it around for a day longer
my tired arms begged me to lighten the load
to let go
as i wander down my path
i leave things in empty hotel rooms
things that i no longer need
things that i probably never needed at all
things that don’t serve a purpose
things that are simply dead weight
and i feel lighter
lighter
lighter
